Music for Holy Week, Part 1

This is the first part of a two-hour presentation at St. John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Cathedral in Munhall, PA, on the books to be used this year for Vespers with the Divine Liturgy on Thursday and Friday of Great and Holy Week, when the feast of the Annunciation (March 25) falls on Great and Holy Friday.

This part of the presentation talks about the promulgation of the new books and goes through the book for Great and Holy Thursday. This handout showing the structure of the services, and copies of the new books, were used during the presentation. The new books are not available in PDF format, but copies are being distributed to all parishes in the Byzantine (Ruthenian) Catholic Church in the United States.

  1. Hopefully, the copies of the printed material will be available to us before Good Friday evening. I suspect in our situation way out on the West coast we will be handed the material ten minutes before the start of the vigil liturgy. (sigh)

  2. It would be very helpful if these books were made available in larger 8.5 x 11 PDF format for priests and cantors especially! Even though this would only happen say every 8 years or so, that would be greatly appreciated. If not, I guess I’ll deconstruct one for Thursday and Friday and enlarge them on single sheets for our services.

      1. Thanks Jeff – I may just deconstruct the books and scan and enlarge the copy size so it’s easier later this week. But I’ll get in touch with you if that doesn’t work.
