Menaion

June 17

The holy martyrs Manuel, Sabel, and Ishmael, in Persia. They were sent by their king to negotiate peace with the emperor Julian the Apostate. Tradition says that Julian had them arrested, condemned, beheaded, and their bodies burned. (c.631-636)

At Vespers

music (samohlasen)

At "O Lord, I have cried": three stichera from the Octoechos, and three for the holy martyrs.

Tone 4, special melody Jako doblja. Like stars of surpassing splendor, * O all-praised passion-bearers, * you illumine the end of the world with divine light, * dispelling the darkness of demons, * the corrupting passions and misfortunes. * We therefore have assembled today, * and we praise your light-bearing and holy feast, O glorious ones.

Let us honor with sacred hymns * wondrous Manuel, blessed Sabel, and all-wise Ishmael; * for confessing the uncreated Trinity * with holiness in the face of the enemy, * they extinguished the falsehood of many gods * with the outpouring of their blood, * and have received glory which never fades away.

O blessed Manuel, Sabel, and Ishmael, * you put to shame the lawless king * who iniquitously commanded you to worship * and pay homage to his mindless, lifeless gods. * Having suffered patiently and lawfully, * you wove for your servants wreaths of victory. * Intercede, O saints, for the world!

Glory – Tone 8.  By pure and sincere love for you, O Word of God, * the holy martyrs put an end to the worship of fire; * and leaving the land of the Chaldeans, * they burned with your own light. * Protected by the armor of faith, * they confounded the tyrant Julian. * The illustrious Manuel, the ever-to-be-remembered Sabel, * and the thrice-blessed Ishmael, * sing to you with the Father and the Spirit, * and they intercede for the salvation of th world.

Now and ever – Theotokion, or Stavrotheotokion

The aposticha are from the Octoechos.

Troparion,  Tone 4.  Your holy martyrs, O Lord our God, * in their struggles, received an incorruptible crown from you. * With your strength, they brought down the tyrants * and broke the cowardly valor of demons. * Through their prayers, O Christ our God, save our souls.
