Menaion

January 22

The holy apostle Timothy who, disciple of St. Paul the Apostle and his assistant in his apostolate, was the leader of the church at Ephesus. Two epistles, which offer wise counsels on the ordering of pastors and the faithful, were written to him.

The holy venerable martyr Anastasius the Persian from Bethsaloe in Persia, monk. After very many tortures, which he had borne steadfastly in Caesarea in Palestine, he was afflicted with many punishments by Chosroes, king of the Persians. After his seventy companions, he too was strangled next to a river and his head cut off. His head was brought to Rome and is still venerated in the church of Ss. Vincent and Anastasius. (628)

At Vespers

music (samohlasen)

At "O Lord, I have cried": three stichera for the holy apostle, and three for the venerable martyr.

Tone 1, special melody Vsechval'niji mučenicy. Enlightened by the radiance of the Spirit, * O holy apostle Timothy, * you traveled throughout the world as a luminous star, * making it gleam with the grace of God. * Intercede with him that our souls be given peace and great mercy.

O holy apostle Timothy, * you drank from the torrent of delights; * in imitation of Christ, you, in your turn, satisfied * the thirst of those who longed to know God. * With joy, you drew near to him to contemplate forever * the resplendent glory of the Trinity * and peace beyond measure.

By placing yourself in submission to Paul * and conversing with the Spirit through writing, * you became wholly radiant with light, * a generous husbandman, and an earnest favorite of the Lord, * living in chastity and piety, O divinely wise Timothy; * and you have been granted a crown of victory as an athlete.

Tone 1, special melody Vsechval'niji mučenicy. O pride of martyrs, having raised up glorious spoils of victory in the face of error, * you possess a fame in keeping with your name, O Anastasius, * celebrated in all places as a resolute conqueror. * Now raise up the faithful from their faults in which they lie buried, * as they venerate your holy memory.

O Anastasius, holy martyr, * having raised up massive spoils of victory against error, * you received a double crown: * one for your ascetic life, and the other for the resolute struggle * which you waged until death. * Christ, your Master, has given you the power of miracles as your reward

The ends of the earth now sing of your miracles, * O Anastasius, divine wonder-worker; * for Christ adorned you with this gift in return for the hardships you suffered for him. * And after your death, he counted you worthy of the immortal glory of the blessed ones.

Glory – Tone 8.   Called before time by God and becoming a disciple of holy Paul, * you were an initiate in the divine mysteries. * Outstanding in your life, keeping the faith intact until death, * you became a faithful hierarch of God, O holy apostle Timothy. * After denouncing the worship of idols as foolishness, * you were stoned and beaten, receiving the crown of martyrdom. * O blessed one, intercede for us * who celebrate your sacred memory with faith.

Now and ever – Theotokion, or Stavrotheotokion

Rejoice, divine flute announcing God to the whole world! Rejoice, pillar of Faith, on which the Church finds support!

Glory – Tone 2. O Christ, You magnified the power of your Cross * in Babylon as well as in Judah. * By it, the Persians came to know * the life-giving feast of your Resurrection. * Among them, a former prisoner of idolatry * became their deliverer: * the indomitable wonder-working witness, * the illustrious martyr Anastasius, * the renowned athlete * who now rejoices with the angels and intercedes for us.

Troparion,  Tone 4.  Having heard the good news and being truly temperate, * you have been clothed with the priesthood in integrity. * You found deep knowledge in the chosen vessel, * and you kept the faith over a smooth course. * O apostle TImoty, beg Christ to save our souls.

Glory – Troparion, Tone 4. Your martyr Anastasius, O Lord our God, * in his struggle, received an incorruptible crown from you. * With your strength, he brought down the tyrants * and broke the cowardly valor of demons. * Through his prayers, O Christ our God, save our souls.
