Great DoxologyPre-festive day of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.

The commemoration of the dedication of the Church of the Resurrection of the Lord in Jerusalem. When St. Helena found the Lord’s cross in Jerusalem, she stayed longer in the city and built churches in Gethsemane, in Bethlehem, on the Mount of Olives, and in other places connected to the life and death of the Lord. She began to build a huge church on Golgatha, which would house both the hill of Calvary and the tomb from which the Lord rose. St. Helena died before it was finished, and the church was consecrated on this date in 335.

The holy bishop martyr Cornelius the Centurion, who was an officer in Palestine converted by the Apostle Peter (cf Acts 10). That same apostle made him bishop and sent him to the pagan town of Skepseis. There he destroyed the temple of Apollo and baptized the local ruler. He was martyred in that town and buried with reverence by his church.

At Vespers

music (samohlasen)

There are six stichera at "O Lord, I have cried": three for the dedication, and three for the bishop martyr.

Tone 6. The Old Law prescribed that we should observe the dedication, * but now at this time it is better to make it a time of renewal. * For the islands must be renewed before God * as the Prophet Isaiah said. * And these islands refer to the Churches of the Gentiles, * which were founded and dedicated to God. * For this reason we also keep the memory of this dedication, * and we observe it as a time of re-newal.

Let us all rededicate ourselves today. * Put aside the old self who imposed restraints and promised death. * Mortify the members of the body; * despise the evil fruit of the tree; * and
live the life of the newly created. * For the sake of this new life remember to put aside the old. * Let us all be rededicated and honor this special day.

O Christ, eternal Word, * you have set your Church as a pillar of might * because you founded it on the rock of faith. * Because of this, it is immovable for all ages. * You will remain with it to the end of days, * for you became man without change ..• We, therefore, bless and praise you, saying: * You are without beginning and end. * O King, glory to you!

Tone 4, special melody Dal jesi znamenie.  Christ saw your good deeds, O Cornelius. * He heard your fervent prayers and sent a holy angel to you. * O praiseworthy one, * He enlightened you as well as the leader of the apostles * who had renewed you by water and the Spirit at your home. * He granted you holiness by the grace of the Holy Spirit.

Having been anointed with the oil of the priesthood, * you traveled to distant lands to announce the news of salvation. * O God-wise one, you rooted out the thorns of error * and sowed the true faith by the Spirit. * For this, O Cornelius, we rejoice and bless you * as a God-inspired hierarch and courageous martyr.

O blessed one, * those who followed your good example were revealed as wise. * You died and were buried in the grave * according to the law of nature. * O God-inspired and wise Cornelius, * you are the source of many miracles. * You heal the sick and cast out evil spirits by the Holy Spirit.

Glory – Tone 6.  O Lord, observing the memory of the Rededication, * we glorify and entreat You, * the Giver of holiness and knowledge, * to sanctify us through the prayers of the glorious sufferers of the passion, * O all-powerful Good One.

Now and ever – in the same tone. Today the Cross is exalted; * today the faithless ones perished; * today the faith is revealed through faithful kings. * Because of the tree, Adam has
fallen, * and now by the Tree of the Cross the demons are filled with terror. * 0 all-powerful Lord, glory to You!

But if it Friday evening, we sing the dogmatikon in the Tone of the Week.

Entrance with censer, and prokeimenon of the day.  Then three readings:

A reading from the First Book of Kings (1 Kings 8:22-23, 27-30).

A reading from Proverbs (Proverbs 3:19-34).

A reading from Proverbs (Proverbs 9:1-11).

The aposticha are for the pre-feast (same as those of the feast):

Tone 5, special melody Radujsja živonosnyj kreste.  Joy to you, life-bearing Cross of the Lord, * invincible triumph of the true faith. * You are the gate to Paradise, * the strength of the faithful, and the stronghold of the Church. * Because of you, corruption no longer has meaning nor power. * By you we have been lifted up from earth to heaven. * You are an invincible weapon against evil, * a glory indeed for saints and martyrs, * and a haven for salvation. * You are the source of mercy to the world.

Exalt the Lord, our God, and worship at his footstool; for he is holy.

Joy to you, most honorable Cross of the Lord. * Through you the human race has been delivered from the curse. * In your exaltation you are a sign of true joy. * O Cross all-venerable,
you scatter all our enemies. * You are the help of Christians, the glory of kings, * the strength of the just, and the splendor of priests. * All who sign themselves with you are freed from
peril. * You are the strength under which we are tended like sheep. * The angels gather around you in awe as the source of peace. * You are the glory of Christ * who grants great mercy to the world

God is our king from all ages. He has accomplished salvation in the middle of the earth.

Joy to you, precious Cross of the Lord, * guide to the blind and physician to the sick, * and resurrection to the dead. * You raised us out of corruption and removed the curse. * Through
you we have been made divine, * and the power of Hades has been destroyed in full. * Therefore, seeing you today lifted up by our priests, * we exalt Christ who was suspended on you; *
and we bow deeply before you, * seeking forgiveness and great mercy.

Glory – Tone 2.  Celebrating the Rededication of the holy Church of the Resurrection, * we glorify You, O Lord. * You blessed it, and it was completed through your renewing
grace. * You received praise in it from the people through the holy Mysteries. * You accepted the unbloody and most pure sacrifice * from the hands of your servants, * and You gave great mercy and the right to cleanse sins * to all those who made offerings to You.

Now and ever – Tone 2.  You have given the life-giving Cross of your goodness * to us unworthy ones, O Lord. * We make offerings to You in prayer, * asking that You save us * who pray to the Theotokos, O Lover of us all.

The troparia:

Troparion of the Dedication, Tone 4.  Lord, Life, and Resurrection of All, * you showed the beauty of the holy dwelling-place of your glory on earth * like the splendor of the firmament on high. * Make it stand firm forever. * Through the Theotokos, accept our prayers * which we unceasingly offer to you within it.

Glory – Troparion of Cornelius, Tone 4.  You shared in the apostles' way of life * and succeeded to their throne, * divinely inspired bishop. * You found access to contemplation in the active life. * Therefore, you rightly taught the word of truth * and struggled for the faith to the shedding of your blood. * O priest-martyr Cornelius, * pray to Christ our God to save our souls.

Now and ever – Troparion of the Pre-feast, Tone 4.  Lord, we offer to you in intercession * the goodness of your life-creating cross * which you gave to us, your unworthy people. * Save our nation and your Church * which implores you through the Theotokos. * For you alone love us all.
