Menaion

September 4

The holy martyr Babylas, bishop of Antioch. St. John Chrysostom wrote of Babylas, “this great and wonderful man—if one can call him a man.” He was archbishop of Antioch in the time of the evil emperor Numerian. He forbade the emperor entrance into the church because he was an idolator. In response, the emperor threw him into prison, and had students of his tortured in front of him in an attempt to have Babylas apostasize. Babylas encouraged them to stand firm and, after they were martyred, he joined them as a victim of the sword. (283)

The holy prophet Moses, who saw God. Moses was chosen by God to free his people who were oppressed in Egypt and to lead them to the promised land. God also revealed himself to Moses on Mount Sinai saying, "I am who I am," and gave the law which would direct the life of the chosen people. The servant of God died in the fullness of years on Mount Nebo, in the land of Moab near the promised land.

At Vespers

music (samohlasen)

There are six stichera at "O Lord, I have cried": three for the martyr, and three for the prophet Moses.

Tone 6, special melody Vsju otloživše.  Dyeing your sacred vestments * in the stream of your own blood, * you were sanctified, O illustrious Babylas, * and thus entered into the Holy of Holies. * You rejoice now forever in the presence of God, * radiant with beauty in your martyrdom, * thus sharing the life of the angels in all purity. * Thus we venerate you and celebrate * your holy solemnity with love, O blessed hierarch.

Bound by iron chains, * you unswervingly follow the path leading to the heavenly city, * O venerable hierarch Babylas, * adored with your wounds as with precious jewels. * There, as a true conquerer, an invincible martyr, * as a holy priest you sing with the angels the pure and holy hymn: * Holy, holy, holy are you, * O consubstantial Trinity.

Heading your spiritual flock, * O venerable hierarch Babylas, * you led them to safe pastures of the faith * in the depths of your wisdom. * You protected them from the beasts, * delighting in the Most High God, your shepherd, * whom you preached before the impious, O blessed one, * rejoicing to be immolated as a spotless lamb * in the company of innocent children. * With them, you were offered as a victim of pleasing fragrance * in a whole-burnt offering.

Tone 1, special melody Zvannyj svyše byv. Having studied * the mysteries of God * and the wonders of his ineffable beauty and glory, * O most lauded God-seer Moses, * you proclaimed them in images, through shadows and indistinct forms. * Throught immaterial things and shadowy images, * you bring us to the concept * of the origin of the divine Radiance. * Having acquired deification throught grace, * O blessed one, you triumphed over Pharaoh. * Pray in behalf of all who honor you.

Having excelled in the virtues, * in a vision you found yourself close to God. * And having been in the midst of the whirlwind and the darkness, * you were wholly glorified. * Hence, you received the tablets of the writing of God, * and like an angel you clearly shine forth with grace * through the eyes of your spirit and your body, * and you cover the blindness of false faith; * and. revealing God's revelation to the faithful, * you transmitted it by your words. * Pray to God that our souls may be saved.

You have spoken with the Lord, * and seen his fiery love shown forth, * O thrice-blessed Moses; * you beheld him face to face! * And while gazing upon your Creator, * you saw his hind quarters in his splendor, * learning (through the crevice in the rock) * of the future divine manifestation of the Word in the flesh. * Therefore, like the wondrous pillar which led the children of Israel, * you go before and save all those who, in faith, praise your name.

Glory (for the martyr) –  Tone 6.   The Church holds your holy struggles to be a support and a foundation. * O bishop-martyr Babylas, * you keep it protected, * a refuge from the ravenous wolves, * as it proclaims your sublime accomplishments, * and magnifies together with you the infants immolated for Christ * in your company, O blessed one.

Now and ever – Theotokion, or Stavrotheotokion

The aposticha are from the Octoechos. Then, for the bishop-martyr:

Glory – Tone 6.  Fighting for the faith before the tribunal of the tyrant, you cried out: "Here I am, with the children God has given me!" You were crowned together with them in the heavens, O hieromartyr Babylas, and you ceaselessly intercede before God that our souls be saved from the snare of the enemy.

Now and ever – Theotokion, or Stavrotheotokion

The troparia:

Troparion of Babylas,  Tone 4.  You shared in the apostles' way of life * and succeeded to their throne, * divinely inspired bishop. * You found access to contemplation in the active life. * Therefore, you rightly taught the word of truth * and struggled for the faith to the shedding of your blood. * O priest-martyr Babylas, * pray to Christ our God to save our souls.

Glory – Troparion of Moses, Tone 2.  O prophet Moses, you reached the summit of virtues. * By this you came to see the glory of God. * You received the tablets of the grace-giving Law * and became the crown of prophets and a mystery of piety; * for you carried grace deep within you.

Now and ever – Theotokion in the same tone, from the day of the week
