Menaion

August 8

Postfestive day of the Transfiguration.

The holy confessor Emilian, bishop of Cyzice. In the time of the emperor Leo the Armenian, Emilian defended the orthodox teaching about the holy icons. This brought about his exile, where for five years he endured many ills and much humiliation for the sake of Christ. (820)

At Vespers

music (samohlasen)

There are six stichera at "O Lord, I have cried": three for the feast, and three for the holy confessor.

Tone 4, special melody Dal jesi znamenie.  O God-wise ones, let us be transformed * and raised joyously to the heights of virtue. * Let us be conformed to Christ in faith, * and let us rejoice exceedingly. * For he transfigured our human nature out of compassion, * and he made clear on Mount Tabor * that he is the Savior of our souls.

O faithful, who see and hear * with love beyond understanding, * behold Christ who gleamed with divine brightness. * May the voice of the Father resound in our hearts, * for he proclaims the beloved Son * who strengthened human frailties on Tabor, * and thus he enlightened our souls.

O Lord, today you revealed your divinity * to the honored apostles, to Moses, and Elijah * as the One who is the God of law and grace. * Deliver us now from the bonds of death. * We glorify your providential love for all, * O all-powerful Jesus and Savior of our souls.

Tone 4, special melody Zvannyj svyše byv. You publicly venerated the icon of Christ * when the violent cruelty of Leo terrified the people. * You rejected the godless heresy of Copronymous. * O all-wise one, with courage you publicly rebuked him * in the whole assembly of bishops. * Thereby, you showed yourself as a brave soldier of Christ, O all-blessed one. * Entreat him to enlighten and save our souls.

When the impious one showed his violent actions against God, * the strength of your convictions was tested by exile. * Knowing no other homeland than Paradise * from which we had fallen, * you endured your sufferings, filled with joy. * Therefore, you were made worthy * to contemplate the incorruptible life of Christ, * and you now live in the heavenly home. * Entreat him to enlighten and save our souls.

You spoke eloquently when Leo gave the order * not to honor the precious icon of Christ. * You proposed the all-holy teaching, * according to which the veneration of the icon * passes over to the divine model, * as it has been written by the Fathers. * You spoke as no one else had spoken. * Those who opposed you were frightened by your words * as animals are frightened by thunder, * O all-noble father and sacred preacher of God.

Glory, now and ever – Tone 1.  He who mysteriously spoke to Moses on Mount Sinai * and said: I am who am, * today manifests himself to his disciples on Mount Tabor * and reveals through his Person * that human nature is reestablished in its original splendor. * As witnesses to this grace and partakers of this joy, * he raised up Moses and Elijah, * the forerunners of the glorious and saving resurrection * made possible by the cross of Christ.

The aposticha are for the post-feast:

Tone 2, special melody Dome Jefratov. Tabor, the mountain of God, rejoices in your name, O Savior, * in the name of the Father who called you beloved, * and who announced you as his Son.

Yours are the heavens and yours is the earth.

It was a marvel to see * the Sun of glory in the Transfiguration * and the radiance of the Brilliant Sun which had been hidden.

Tabor and Hermon shout for joy at your name.

The disciples from the earth, * Moses from the dead, and Elijah from on high * stood before You humbly when You were transfigured.

Glory, now and ever – Tone 1.  When David, the forefather of the Lord, * foresaw in spirit your coming in the flesh, * he invited the whole creation to rejoice, * crying out prophetically: * O Savior, Tabor and Hermon shall rejoice in your name, * for indeed you ascended this mountain with your disciples. * Through your Transfiguration * you returned Adam's nature to its original splendor, * restoring its very elements * to the glory and brilliance of your divinity. ' Therefore, we cry out to you: * O Creator of all, glory to You!

The troparia:

Troparion of Emilian, Tone 4. Your life has shown you to your flock as a rule of faith, * an image of gentleness, and a teacher of moderation. * You acquired greatness through humility * and wealth through poverty. * O father and bishop Emilian, * intercede with Christ our God to save our souls.

Glory, now and ever – Troparion of the Transfiguration, Tone 7.  You were transfigured on the mountain, O Christ our God, * revealing as much of your glory to your disciples as they could behold. * Through the prayers of the Theotokos, * let your everlasting light also shine on us sinners. * O Giver of Light, glory to you.
