July 24

The holy great martyr Christine, at Volsinus [now Bolsena] in Tuscany, virgin and martyr. (c.300)

At Vespers

music (samohlasen)

At "O Lord, I have cried": three stichera from the Octoechos, and three for the holy martyrs.

Tone 4, special melody Jako doblja.  The one who orders all things according to his providence granted you the name of Christ as you deserve; for you have a better end in both your name and your works, having betrothed yourself to Christ piously and with faith. And as the daughter of the King of heaven you rejoice with him, praying for us, O martyr.

Desiring the heavenly Father, O glorious one, you spurned your impious father; and loving the Jerusalem on high as your mother, you rejected your mother's overweening love, and, deified by Christ with all, you afterward laid down your life, O martyr, undaunted by tortures.

Neither the passionate attachment of your parents, nor the pleasure of food, nor possession of riches, O glorious one, nor threats of torments, neither fire, the sword, the abyss or the wheel, nor yet the attack of wild beasts were able to separate you from the love of the Creator, O virgin martyr Christine, glory and boast of the martyrs.

Glory – Tone 2.  As though you were an alabaster vase filled with perfume, O invincible Christine, you poured forth your blood for Christ, your bridegroom. But you received the incorruptible crown from him in return, O martyr all-worthy of our praise. By calling upon the Holy Spirit, and by your word, you restored life to the one who had been bitten by venomous serpents. Thus, in the heavenly mansions, you have been welcomed by the Lover of us all, Jesus, the Savior of our souls.

Now and ever – Theotokion, or Stavrotheotokion

The aposticha are from the Octoechos, concluding with:

Glory – Tone 2.  By your deeds, you truly conformed yourself to the name of Christ, which you bore. Becoming his bride in virginal purity, by the good will of the Father and with the help of the Holy Spirit, you shone more brightly than the sun in your perseverance as you struggled in martyrdom. Thus, you were offered at the heavenly altar as a pure and spotless victim, exulting throughout the ages in the choir of virgins and martyrs. Together with them, O Christine, entreat the Lord, whose name you bear, to grant peace and great mercy to those who honor you.

Troparion, Tone 4. Your lamb Christine, O Jesus, cries out in a loud voice: * I love you, my Bridegroom; I seek you with painful longing. * I am crucified with you; in your baptism, I am buried with you; *I suffer for you that I may reign with you; * and I die for you that I may live with you. * Receive me as a spotless sacrifice immolated with love for you. * By her prayers, O merciful One, save our souls.

OR:

Troparion,  Tone 4.  By a Gospel vocation you were called to be Christ’s bride, O glorious Christine. You regarded the glory and pleasures of this world as without value, and you bravely suffered torture. Therefore we honor your suffering with praise, O martyr, namesake of Christ.

At Vespers

music (samohlasen)

We sing “Blessed is the man.” There are eight stichera at "O Lord, I have cried":

Tone 8, special melody O preslavnaho čudese.  O all-glorious wonder! * The divine and honored summit of the all-praised brothers * has shone upon us today, * summoning the new people to praise the all-valiant martyrs: * Boris, who suffered earnestly, * and Gleb, the innocent lamb slain with him * for the Savior of our souls, who was slain for our sake. (twice)

O all-praised one, * having first submitted the royal purple of your kingship to Christ, * and acknowledged him as true God and King of all, * you rejected the vain gods of your ancestors. * Therefore, Christ has enriched you with gifts of miracles, * and the Savior of our souls, glorious in his saints, * has given you eternal crowns instead of those which pass away.

Blessed is the land and city wherein you were raised, * and the honored temple which received your bodies * is now adorned as with the kingdom's crowns. * O right pleasing guardians, who strike terror in the hearts of our enemies * and drive them far from your homeland, * glorious Boris and all-wondrous Gleb, * pray for us, that our souls may be saved.

Tone 2, special melody Kijmi pochval'nimy. With what wreaths of praise shall we crown those who are hymned, * who though separate in body are united in spirit, * the fervent helpers of the faithful people, * the adornment of the land of Rus and the world's delight, * who with manly intent destroyed the might of the demons * with Christ as their ally, who grants the world great mercy? (twice)

With what beauties of praise shall we adorn those who are hymned: * noble Boris, who with boldness acquired power over the passions, * and gentle Gleb, his fellow zealot, * both of whom were beacons shining together, * illumining all the pious with the light of virtue? * For having learned the commandments of Christ, * they have been fittingly glorified, * entreating him to grant great mercy to us all.

With what spiritual discourse shall we compose * the honored feast of the all-glorious martyrs, * who forsook corrupt earthly glory for the sake of Christ? * For the one was pierced by a spear in his side, * and the other was slaughtered like a lamb. * They have been fittingly glorified by Christ, * and have received the gift of healing, * asking great mercy for all, as is meet.

Glory – Tone 6.  Come, let us praise the wonder-workers and martyrs! * For, having suffered lawfully, * they vanquished the adverse foe, * and now stand, splendidly adorned, * rejoicing before the throne of Christ. * With hymns let us praise their memory with gladness and love, * crying out: Rejoice, O helpers of all the world, * allies against the Enemy! * Rejoice, you healers of the sick, expellers of demons! * Rejoice, O beloved summits of piety, all-comely brothers, * glorious Boris and wondrous Gleb, beloved of Christ, * who entreat the Holy Trinity for our sake, that peace be granted to the world * and our souls might be saved.

Now and ever – the dogmatikon of Saturday evening, in the same tone, or (on Friday night or Saturday night) in the Tone of the week.

A reading from the Wisdom of Solomon (Wisdom 4:7-15).

Stichera at the litija:

Tone 4 samohlasen. Even though the new Cain, the hater of God and despiser of his brothers, deprived you of an earthly realm by murder, yet has Christ given you a kingdom which is without end and will not pass away. Standing before him with the angelic armies, pray that he save those who with love praise your most honored and greatly festive memory.

The earth has been made holy by your most precious blood, and people have been enriched by you, receiving abundant healing, O divinely wise favorites of Christ. O glorious Boris and innocent Gleb, entreat the Lord, to whom you held fast from your youth, that he save those who praise you with faith.

Glory – Tone 5 Bolhar.  With joy let us all celebrate the memory of the great martyrs today, glorifying with hymns and songs Christ the Savior. He has made his saints wondrous on earth with miracles. and the grace of many healings. And let us say with joy, crying out to them: Rejoice, for you have received grace to defeat the passions! Rejoice, for by your blood you have come to dwell in everlasting life! Rejoice, you speedy listeners to those in tribulation, who deliver your homeland from perils! O God-pleasing Boris and Gleb, entreat the Lord, that he have mercy upon our souls.

Now and ever – the aposticha theotokion of Saturday evening in the same tone.

The aposticha are for feast:

Tone 4, special melody Dal jesi znamenie.  Come, lovers of chastity, let us honor the venerable pair who loved Christ, who has dominion over all with a pure heart and contrite soul: the glorious passion-bearer Boris and the meek and right wondrous Gleb. Pure in soul and body, they have destroyed hordes of the demons.

The just cried out and the Lord heard them, and rescued them from all their distress

You sprang forth from an honored root, O glorious and right noble brothers, and, truly loving nobility, you desired the glory untouched by corruption, yearning for life and the indestructible kingdom; and having suffered for righteousness’ sake, you have received crowns of victory, O blessed passion-bearers and intercessors for our souls.

Many are the trials of the just, but from them all the Lord will rescue them.

Fulfilling the commandments of Christ and his precepts, in word and deed, you did not oppose the enemies who unjustly arrived to slay you; and as imitators of Stephen the first martyr you said, praying: Do not hold this sin against them, O Jesus our God, Savior of our souls, the lover of us all!

Glory – Tone 8.  Come, you newly baptized assemblies of Rus! * Behold how, though blameless of any fault, * evil judgment befalls the martyr Boris; * for they pierced his side with a spear * and shed his blood at the instigation of the devil. * And Gleb was slaughtered like an innocent lamb * by his own brother, Svyatopolk. * Yet they have been crowned, while he has passed into oblivion; * they are glorified, while he is tormented in Gehenna. * And they entreat Christ God to save our souls.

Now and ever – the aposticha theotokion of Saturday evening in the same tone.

Troparion,  Tone 2.  Righteous martyrs for the gospel and sharers in the passion, * you did not oppose the violence of the enemy. * Although your brother tried to kill your bodies, * he still could not touch your souls. * Let the evil lover of power groan unhappily. * You are filled with joy among the angels, standing before the Holy Trinity. * Please pray for your homeland and its conversion * and for the salvation of its people. (twice)

Glory, now and ever – Theotokion, Tone 4. Rejoice, O Virgin Theotokos! * Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you! * Blessed are you among women, * and blessed is the fruit of your womb. * For you gave birth to Christ, the Savior and Redeemer of our souls.
