Menaion

June 11

PolyeleosThe holy Apostles Bartholomew and Barnabas. Barnabas was a good man and "full of the Holy Spirit and of faith.” He was counted among the first of the faithful at Jerusalem, preached the Gospel at Antioch and introduced Saul of Tarsus, just converted, to a number of the brothers. He accompanied Paul in his first trip to Asia to evangelize. He was present at the Council of Jerusalem. Having returned to the island of Cyprus, his native land, he spread the Gospel there.

Bartholomew the apostle, who is believed by many to be the same as Nathanael, was born in Cana of Galilee and was taken to Christ Jesus by Philip at the Jordan. Afterwards, the Lord called him to follow him and he joined the Twelve. After the Ascension of the Lord it is said that he preached the Gospel in India and there was crowned with martyrdom.

At Vespers

music (samohlasen)

We sing “Blessed is the man.” There are eight stichera at "O Lord, I have cried."

Tone 4, special melody Jako doblja. As you proclaimed the Word of God, O holy Apostle, using your tongue as a net, you drew the whole world up from the depths of vain idolatry and deadly godlessness, in order to lead it to Christ in faith, to that God who had given you grace as his chosen disciple, O Bartholomew. (twice)

Jesus, the Sun of Glory, sent you forth to the world as a ray of light to scatter powerfully the darkness of godlessness and illumine those who lay in the night and sleep of error. You were to make them children of light and day, O Bartholomew! (twice)

Obedient to the will of the One whose will is followed by all creation, and imitating him as a teacher of truth, you joyfully drank from the chalice of your passion as you died on the cross. And now you rejoice forever together with the angels and apostles in the presence of the Object of your desire, O Bartholomew!

Tone 4, special melody Dal jesi znamenie. Holy Apostle, you received invincible might over demons and the power to drive out the very prince of darkness in the name of Christ. Like the sun, you traveled about giving light to the whole world. Being the first to arrive in Rome, O glorious Barnabas, you proclaimed there the saving coming of Christ our God.

Imitating the supreme Goodness, you led a life like that which our God lived in the flesh, O apostle Barnabas. In union with your Master, you were a man who did all things well and earned the name “son of consolation." By the excellence of your life and the purity of your spirit you helped believers live in grace.

O Barnabas, you became a wondrous harp; played in a harmonious manner by the divine action of the Spirit. You were charged to call the nations to the knowledge of Christ. By your words and works, you were to transform the whole world. And you gave it light that it might confess the true divinity of Jesus, the Savior of our souls!

Glory –  Tone 6. O all-praised Barnabas, radiant vessel of the Holy Spirit and son of consolation, even before Paul you were the foremost of the seventy disciples, and with Paul you preached the Gospel to the ends of the earth. Therefore, fulfilling your discourse of grace with your deeds, you offered yourself to be a pure holocaust to Christ your Teacher. We pray: beg always, O glorious apostle, that our souls be saved.

Shining lights, most pure vessels of Jesus Christ, you received complete enlightenment from the Spirit in faith. Pillars of the Church, wondrous heavens declaring the glory of God: intercede before him that our souls be given peace and great mercy.

The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament proclaims his handiwork.
