Menaion

March 12

Our venerable father and confessor Theophane of the Sygrian Mountain in Bithynia in the monastery of Ager Magnus. He was called the Chronographer. Having been a very wealthy man, he became a poor monk. He was held in prison for two years by the emperor Leo the Armenian on account of his defense of the cult of holy icons. From there he was deported to Samothrace, where, consumed by his tribulations, he yielded up his spirit. (817)

Our holy father Gregory, pope of Rome. After having entered the monastic life, he performed the duty of ambassador to Constantinople. Then on the third of September, he was chosen for the Roman See. He dealt well with earthly matters and, as a servant of the servants of God, he attended to holy things. He showed that he was a true pastor in directing affairs, in fully assisting the needy, in fostering the monastic life, and everywhere strengthening or extending the faith. He also wrote excellently on many things concerning moral and pastoral matters. (604)

At Vespers

music (samohlasen)

At "O Lord, I have cried", there are three stichera for the venerable father.

Tone 8, special melody O preslavnoho čudese.  O Father Theophane, of divine thoughts, * you were named for the Theophany of Christ. * You followed in his life-giving footsteps, * abandoning the pleasures of this life * and turning your gaze to the splendor for which you yearned. * By your longing for it, * you were perfectly united to God.

O Father Theophane, of divine thoughts, * despite your physical frailty, * you patiently endured the bitterness of exile. * When the madness of Leo caused your banishment, * O father worthy of all praise, * you cared more for the holy icons * than for the condition of your body. * But you frustrated the plans of Leo, * his dark spirit and his vain thoughts, * bringing them to derision.

All good comes to us from the Lord, * who generously rewarded you for your sufferings, * O blessed Father, * by granting you the power to expel demons and heal diseases. * We cannot even speak of the ineffable joy * which you merited to experience * in the place where the angels rejoice in their choirs, * for you ceaselessly look upon the face of the all-powerful Lord.

Glory, now and ever – Theotokion, or Stavrotheotokion

Troparion,  Tone 5.  Adorning your life with purity and disciplining your body, * you slew the goats of the devil, O father Theophane. * You were carried to eternal life in the Lord. * As you stand before him, now pray for all of us.

Glory, now and ever – Kontakion of Theophane, Tone 2.  When you received the heavenly message, * you quickly turned away from the confusion of life. * When you retired into solitude, * you received the power of miracles and the grace of prophecy. * Afterwards you gave up a wife and wealth, O venerable father.

Or for our holy father Gregory, pope of Rome:

Troparion of Gregory,  Tone 4.  You received divine grace from heaven, O blessed Gregory, * and strength from his divine power. * You sought to follow the way of the Gospel, * and your journey's end brought your Christ's reward. * O blessed saint, beg him to save us.

Glory, now and ever – Kontakion of Gregory, Tone 4.  You became very much like the shepherds of Christ. * You led flocks of monks into the heavenly sheepfold. * There you taught your flock the law of Christ, * O blessed father Gregory; * and now you sing in the heavenly abode, * and you rejoice, happy in their company.
