{"id":1375,"date":"2020-01-02T00:59:30","date_gmt":"2020-01-02T05:59:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mci.archpitt.org\/blog\/blog\/?p=1375"},"modified":"2020-03-22T01:17:07","modified_gmt":"2020-03-22T05:17:07","slug":"making-the-grade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mci.archpitt.org\/blog\/making-the-grade\/","title":{"rendered":"Making the Grade: Final MCI graduate under the &#8220;old&#8221; program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From 2001 to 2014, the Metropolitan Cantor Institute held Saturday chant classes in Pittsburgh, covering a different topic at each class.\u00a0 Over a multi-year rotation, cantors learned\u00a0 necessary skills, and received a certificate for finishing the full course of study.\u00a0 Eventually, we added an in-person &#8220;final exam&#8221; in the form of a cantored Divine Liturgy at which an MCI instructor could see, comment on, and &#8220;sign off&#8221; that a student had in fact learned the skills we tried to teach.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mci.archpitt.org\/blog\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Benedict-Mary.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-1376 size-thumbnail alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/mci.archpitt.org\/blog\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Benedict-Mary-150x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>So it is with great happiness that I can congratulate <strong>Mary Benedict<\/strong>, cantor of Saints Peter and Paul Byzantine Catholic Church in Erie, PA.\u00a0 Mary is the <em>last<\/em> cantor to complete the &#8220;old&#8221; MCI program, having regularly driven to Pittsburgh to attend classes, and completing her final examination in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a list of graduates of the Metropolitan Cantor Institute program.
