{"id":1157,"date":"2019-04-10T13:27:39","date_gmt":"2019-04-10T17:27:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mci.archpitt.org\/blog\/blog\/?p=1157"},"modified":"2019-04-10T13:27:39","modified_gmt":"2019-04-10T17:27:39","slug":"music-for-pascha-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mci.archpitt.org\/blog\/music-for-pascha-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Music for Pascha, Part 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As I mentioned in the <a href=\"https:\/\/mci.archpitt.org\/blog\/blog\/music-for-pascha-1\/\">previous post<\/a>, we have very few paraliturgical hymns or &#8220;spiritual songs&#8221; for the time from Pascha to Pentecost, so I am considering the possibility of including new settings of liturgical hymns for this season in the <a href=\"https:\/\/mci.archpitt.org\/blog\/songs\/Hymnal_project.html\">forthcoming hymnal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the last post, we looked at some additional settings of the Paschal troparion (&#8220;Christ is risen from the dead&#8221;).\u00a0 We might also want to provide a Paschal setting of the Cherubic Hymn or Cherubikon; here is one based on the Paschal hypakoje (&#8220;The women with Mary before the dawn&#8221;) which has been used for many years at Saint Elias Byzantine Catholic Church in Munhall, PA:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/mci.archpitt.org\/blog\/images\/music\/misc\/Cherubikon_PaschalMag_part1.png\" width=\"670\" height=\"418\" \/><\/p>\n<p>and after the commemorations:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/mci.archpitt.org\/blog\/images\/music\/misc\/Cherubikon_PaschalMag_part2.png\" width=\"672\" height=\"242\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I have also prepared <a href=\"https:\/\/mci.archpitt.org\/prostopinije\/melodies\/Cherubikon_Pascha.html\">matching versions<\/a> of &#8220;We praise you, we bless you&#8221; and the four Communion Hymns which are always sung in the Paschal season (for Pascha, Thomas Sundays, other Sundays, and Mid-Pentecost).<\/p>\n<p>Now, I think there are certainly some Cherubic Hymn settings out there which are sort of so-so, but there are also some that are quite good, and usable in English.\u00a0 If you have one of your own, consider sending it in!\u00a0 Years ago, the Inter-Eparchial Music Commission discussed the possibility of taking such settings, looking them over, perhaps making some tweaks as needed, and adding them gradually to our repertoire.\u00a0 I am not sure if the new hymal is the best place to publish them, but the hymnal <em>process <\/em>may be a good place to start.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, we have one setting of the Our Father for use in the Paschal season, based on the Paschal canon (DL 167-168):<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/mci.archpitt.org\/blog\/images\/music\/DL\/Our_Father_Paschal_canon.GIF\" width=\"701\" height=\"433\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But here is another from St. Elias in Munhall, based on the Paschal hypakoje, &#8220;The women with Mary before the dawn):<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/mci.archpitt.org\/blog\/images\/music\/misc\/Our_Father_Paschal_hypakoje.png\" width=\"668\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This, too, is music we could probably use right away in some parishes. Especially if weekday Divine Liturgies are held, there are a lot of opportunities to sing the Lord&#8217;s prayer!<\/p>\n<p>I have taken all this music and combined it with <a href=\"https:\/\/mci.archpitt.org\/blog\/blog\/music-for-pascha-1\/\">the Paschal troparion settings from yesterday<\/a> into a <a href=\"https:\/\/mci.archpitt.org\/blog\/sheetmusic\/general\/Paschal_music_supplement.pdf\">music supplement for Pascha<\/a>.\u00a0 Tomorrow, we will look at our one real Paschal hymn, &#8220;Christ is risen!\u00a0 Joy from heaven&#8221; and see how that might fit into the picture.<\/p>\n<p>Please leave your thoughts about this music &#8211; or other liturgical settings we might like to have for the Paschal season &#8211; in a comment below!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As I mentioned in the previous post, we have very few paraliturgical hymns or &#8220;spiritual songs&#8221; for the time from Pascha to Pentecost, so I am considering the possibility of including new settings of liturgical hymns for this season in the forthcoming hymnal.
