November 24

Postfestive day of the Entrance

Six sticheraThe holy great martyr Catherine, about whom it is told that she was an Alexandrian and a martyr, filled with sharpness of mind and wisdom no less than with strength of soul. Her body is honored in pious veneration in a famous coenobium on Mt. Sinai. (310)

The holy great martyr Mercury was an Armenian soldier in the army of the emperor Decius. In a battle, an angel of the Lord appeared to Mercury and steeled him for combat. After this victory, he was made a commander by the emperor, but was denounced to him as a Christian by jealous soldiers. He was beheaded in Cappadocia, sometime between 251-259.

At Vespers

music (samohlasen)

There are six stichera at "O Lord, I have cried": three for Catherine, and three for Mercury.

Tone 1, special melody Nebesnych činov. The city of Alexandria is adorned today. * O Martyr, it has your burial shroud in the holy church. * O Catherine, we also devoutly celebrate your precious memory. * Pray for all those who venerate you.

Let us now celebrate the memory of Catherine, * for by word and deed she mightily defeated * the opposing orator and the powers of the enemy. * Deliver us, O God, from godless enemies.

Rejoice, O precious and all-glorious martyr Catherine. * Mount Sinai has seen the unburnable bush of Moses. * Christ now preserves your body which is pleasing to God * until He comes again in glory.

Tone 4, special melody Jako dobl'a. O sufferer of the passion, Mercury, *  by a fighting spirit you conquered the foe. * Like an invincible soldier, by the armor of faith * you cut down thousands of learned Moors. * Because you finished your battle * you have been crowned with all the martyrs, * O most blessed Martyr.

At the command of the Divine Spirit, * an angel was sent from heaven to heal your wounds. * O worthy one, they were caused by the piercing of burning irons. * You also underwent a lashing and hanging. * O Martyr, your suffering body was covered with blood.

O Mercury, while waging war for your earthly king, * you were ordered to eat the sacrificial offerings. * O blessed and God-wise one, * you suffered tortures, burning by fire, and a wretched death. * You were carried as a crown-bearer to Christ. * Now joined to the ranks of martyrs, you pray for us.

Glory – Tone 2.  O lovers of martyrs, * let us joyfully gather together for the feast of the God-wise martyr Catherine. * Let us cover her with praises as though with flowers. * Let us cry out to her: Rejoice, * since her teachings confounded the erring orators. * They were full of ignorance, * and she tutored them in the divine faith. * Rejoice, O dedicated handmaiden! * Your body was given over to many tortures * because of your love for the Creator. * We extol you, since you have inherited heaven * as the reward for your pains; * now you are delighting in the eternal glory. * We sing hymns to you and hope to share in your glory.

Now and ever – Tone 8.  O Lady and Bride of God, * you entered the temple of God in your infancy * to be brought up in the Holy of Holies, * for you are holy. * The archangel Gabriel was sent to serve you and bring you food. * All the heavenly powers were amazed * at the sight of the Holy Spirit dwelling in you. * Therefore, O most pure and immaculate Mother of God, * since you are glorified in heaven and on earth, * through your prayers save our human race.

The aposticha are for the post-feast:

Tone 1, special melody Nebesnych činov.  O come all you lovers of feasts, * let us venerate the unique pure Theotokos with hymns. * For now she is being led into the Temple of God * in order to live in it with brilliance.* She is truly the most holy Temple of Christ * and the mediatrix of every joy.

She is led to the King with her maiden companions.

O prophet, open up the doors. * Receive her who is the praise of angels and people. " She who is being brought Into the Temple of the Lord is a bright joy. * She comes to live inside and dance with joy * since it is the temple and the dwelling of God.

They are escorted amid gladness and joy; they pass within the palace of the king.

Mary the Theotokos is being led into the temple. * She is revealed receiving bread from an angel who cries out to her: * Rejoice, O betrothed of God, blessed virgin Theotokos, * O blessed Inheritance and adornment of all; * you shall conceive a Son without a marriage union.

Glory – Tone 2.  O pure conqueror Catherine, * because you lived a spiritual life, * you were brought to the godless judgment. " Adorned with the flowers of God's splendor * and clothed with the strength of divine might, * you mocked the will of the torturers * and ignored the coaxings of the orators, * O long-suffering Martyr.

Now and ever – Tone 8.  David spoke out beforehand of you, O most pure One. * He foresaw the sacredness of your entrance Into the temple. * Today, O most glorified one, * we celebrate and honor you * because you, the Mother of the Word of Life, * were a virgin before and after his birth. * Today Zechariah happily receives you in the temple, O Lady. * The Holy of Holies rejoices * since it has enfolded you, the wellspring of life. * Because of your honor, we praise you with psalms and hymns. * Implore your Son and our God in our behalf " to grant great mercy to us.

Troparion of Catherine, Tone 4.  You enlightened the pagan philosophers with the light of your works. * You were like a full moon for those who travel at night. * You overcame the darkness and converted the queen. * You stood up to the torturer, O blessed Catherine, chosen by God. * On your wishes you were carried to the heavenly bridal chamber * of your splendid Bridegroom Christ. * You were espoused to Him with a regal crown, O bride chosen by God. * In the company of the angels, pray for us who keep your memory.

Glory – Troparion of Mercury, Tone 4.  Having passed through martyrdom like a true soldier, * you have marched on to the King immortal, O Mercury. * You have been welcomed into the choir of martyrs. * Receive our prayers and pray in turn for us, * for we hold fast to your precious memory.

Now and ever – Troparion of the feast,  Tone 4.  Today is the prelude of God's benevolence * and the herald of our salvation, * for the Virgin openly appears in the temple of God * and foretells Christ to all. * Let us also with full voice exclaim to her: * Rejoice, fulfillment of the Creator's plan.
