Menaion

October 20

Six sticheraThe holy great martyr Artemius. Egyptian by birth, he was the commander-in- chief of the army of emperor St. Constantine the Great. When the cross of the Lord appeared in the sky to the emperor, Artemius also saw it and came to faith. He was eventually appointed governor in Egypt. During the reign of emperor Julian the Apostate, he was stripped of his rank and thrown into prison. The emperor had him cruelly killed. (392)

At Vespers

music (samohlasen)

There are six stichera at "O Lord, I have cried". (At weekday Vespers, each is sung twice.)

Tone 4, special melody Jako dobl'a.  O blessed Artemius, * you handed your resolute body, * tried by all sorts of combat, * over to multiple punishments and the most cruel scourgings. * You never denied Christ. * You never sacrificed to idols, but patiently endured, * as though it was someone other than yourself who was suffering. * You awaited the coming rewards and immortal renown.

Mangled while suspended aloft, * broken by stoning, * laid waste on every side by heated irons, * and beheaded with a sword, you remained steadfast, * having set the foundation of the house of your soul * upon the Rock of the mind, O glorious one. * Therefore through your victories * you joined the angels and martyrs, filled with ineffable light.

Your relics, O glorious one, * ever pour forth the grace of healings upon those who love you, * and they drown passions and infirmities, O Artemius, * and rout legions of evil demons; * and they water the hearts of the faithful, * causing the divine fruits of the virtues amd the knowledge of piety to spring forth.

Glory – Tone 2.   Let us venerate Artemius, that light of the faith, * for he denounced the hateful emperor. * With the blood of his martyrdom, the Lord clothed his Church in purple. * Thus he received abundant grace to heal diseases for the faithful * who have recourse to the shrine where his relics repose.

Now and ever – Theotokion, or Stavrotheotokion

The aposticha are from the Octoechos. Then:

Glory – Tone 6.  Having suffered for Christ * in accordance with the law, O Artemius, * and brought to nothing both an earthly emperor and the spiritual foe, * as is proper you received a crown from the Savior, * the Judge who determined your ordeal. * And now you rejoice in the heavens with the ranks of the angels, * manifestly delighting in the light on high, * and partaking abundantly of the first and tri-hypostatic Light. * Therefore, we, the right-believing people who love the martyrs, * with hymns cry out to you: * Rejoice, invincible adamant diamond of soul and mighty warrior of Christ! * Rejoice, destroyer of the falsehood of idolatry and radiant champion of truth! * Yet entreat the Lord * that through you we also may receive a place at the throne of his majesty.

Troparion,  Tone 4.  You were fortified by the true faith, O martyr, * and you vanquished the torturer and his idol-offerings. * Because you reproached that king, * the great King has bestowed on you a shining crown of victory * and astonishing miracles of healing * with which you heal all who call on you. * O great Artemius, beg Christ our God to save our souls.
